Dahi Puri

How to Make Homemade Dahi Puri:

Dahi Puri is a popular Indian street food that combines crispy puris with a medley of flavorful toppings like yogurt, chutneys, and spices. Dahi puri is best enjoyed fresh, as the puris can get soggy if left for too long. If you’re making it in advance, keep the chutneys and yogurt separate, and assemble just before serving. Enjoy! Here's a step-by-step guide to making Dahi Puri at home:

Ingredients:

For the Puri:

  • 20-25 Pani Puri puris (crispy hollow puris)

For the Filling:

  • 1/2 cup boiled potatoes, mashed
  • 1/4 cup boiled chickpeas (optional)
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped (optional)
  • 1-2 green chilies, finely chopped (optional)
  • 1/2 tsp cumin powder
  • 1/2 tsp chaat masala

  • Salt, to taste
  • Fresh coriander leaves, chopped (optional)

For the Dahi (Yogurt) Topping:

  • 1 cup plain yogurt (whisked to smooth consistency)
  • 1/4 tsp cumin powder
  • 1/4 tsp black salt
  • Salt, to taste
  • 1/2 tsp sugar (optional, for sweetness)

Chutneys:

  • Tamarind chutney (sweet chutney) – 2-3 tbsp
  • Mint-coriander chutney (green chutney) – 2-3 tbsp

Toppings:

  • Sev (crispy fried gram flour noodles)

    • In a bowl, combine mashed boiled potatoes, boiled chickpeas (optional), chopped onion, chopped green chilies (if you like spice), cumin powder, chaat masala, red chili powder, and salt.
    • Mix everything together until well-combined. You can also add some fresh coriander leaves for extra flavor.
  2. Prepare the yogurt:

    • Whisk the yogurt in a bowl until smooth.
    • Add cumin powder, black salt, salt, and sugar (optional) to the yogurt. Mix well and set aside.
  3. Assemble the Dahi Puri:

    • Take each puri and gently create a small hole in the center by pressing down lightly.
    • Stuff each puri with the potato filling mixture.
    • Carefully spoon a generous amount of the prepared yogurt onto the stuffed puris.
    • Drizzle tamarind chutney and mint-coriander chutney over the puris to add sweetness and spice.
  4. Garnish:

    • Top the dahi puris with sev for crunchiness.
    • Sprinkle with a little chaat masala, red chili powder, and garnish with fresh coriander leaves.
    • Optionally, add pomegranate seeds for a burst of color and sweetness.
  5. Serve:

    • Serve immediately, while the puris are still crispy, and enjoy the delicious combination of flavors!
